Our values
At Dana Briggs Consulting, our values are the north star that guides every decision we make, from strategic directions to daily operations. They are not merely statements; they are deeply embedded in the fabric of our company culture and reflect what we stand for as a team. Our values drive how we deliver our services, whom we choose to hire, and the standards to which we hold ourselves and each other accountable. They guide us in our mission to inspire and equip animal care and use professionals, driving excellence, compassion, and innovation across the industry.
-
At Dana Briggs Consulting, we strive for excellence in all aspects of animal care and use programs. We believe that true excellence extends beyond animal welfare, encompassing governance, leadership, communication, training, and every element that contributes to a program’s success. Our mission is to define and showcase excellence as the standard for the entire field.
-
We are committed to overdelivering in everything we do, consistently exceeding expectations and seeking ways to add value. Whether through our independent reviews, workshops, or consulting services, we aim to deliver an outsized impact that delights our clients and sets new benchmarks for the field.
-
We are committed to continually evolving our services and offerings, with the goal of uplifting the industry and setting higher standards. Our focus is on inspiring our clients to achieve excellence in their own programs, while we continuously refine our approach to provide even greater value and impact.
-
Compassion is at the heart of our work. We not only care deeply about animal welfare, but also about the people we work with. We recognise that professionals are doing the best they can with the knowledge and resources available to them. We meet people where they are and support them as they work toward excellence—whatever that looks like for them in their current context.
-
We operate with the highest level of integrity, advocating for transparency, honesty, and clarity in all our interactions. We believe that clarity—being straightforward and candid—is a form of kindness, and this principle guides our consulting and education services.
-
Excellence in animal care and use programs requires a diverse range of skills, experiences, and perspectives. We celebrate diversity in professional backgrounds and are dedicated to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion within our team. By recognising and nurturing the unique strengths that each individual brings, we create opportunities for growth and contribution, ensuring that both our team and the programs we support are well-rounded and high performing.
-
At Dana Briggs Consulting, we are committed to making our firm a wonderful place to work, where each team member is supported in living and working in a way that suits them. We consciously invest in the development of our people, ensuring they have the opportunities and resources to grow, thrive, and have the meaningful impact they seek within our field.

Dr. Dana Briggs, PhD (she/her)
Hi, I’m Dana.
Since the days of my undergrad Zoology classes, I’ve had just about every role possible in an animal care and use program: student, researcher, educator, animal carer, Animal Ethics Committee (AEC) member and Chair, program manager and now consultant and independent external reviewer.
I’m fascinated by how humans, animals and the environment interact, how we think and talk about the ethics of those interactions, and how they are governed by law in the various countries, states and territories I work in.
I strongly support the use of animals for scientific purposes, recognising that a significant amount of this work aims to directly benefit the individual animals or their species. I believe that when we use animals for scientific purposes that we must demonstrate the 3Rs (replacement of animals, reduction of the number of animals used, and refinement of techniques to minimise pain and distress), be strongly justified (the potential costs to the animals must be outweighed by the potential benefit of the work) and uphold high standards of animal welfare, scientific integrity and regulatory compliance.
As a life-long devotee to continuous improvement, I’m committed to helping my clients do better in an approachable, compassionate and professional way. To this end, I pride myself on delivering pragmatic solutions that will long outlast my engagement.

Katrina Black (she/her)
Hi, I am Katrina,
I am passionate about the environment and conservation and have extensive experience as an ecologist throughout New Zealand, Australia and Canada. I have worked as a consultant and more recently for conservation organisations, and I also have experience in auditing and compliance.
As an ecologist, I completed aquatic and terrestrial assessments, fauna trapping (pit fall trapping, Elliot traps), fish salvage and stream and wetland mapping projects. I have also provided environmental monitoring for water projects and wildlife monitoring including moose, mountain goats and koalas.
The use of animals for scientific purposes is an important aspect to ecology and science in general. The work is often directly benefiting individual species that are threatened / endangered or translocating new populations of regionally extinct species. It is important that this use is compliant, justified and undertaken with commendable animal welfare.
Being proactive and efficient has allowed me to naturally excel as a consultant, and I’ve strengthened my communication and management skills over nearly 10 years of consulting. I am calm, compassionate and confident – these attributes mean I am well liked and respected by my clients.
I am a critical thinker and can quickly review and assess a situation, plan and implement a solution. I strive to assist our clients to continually improve, while maintaining compliance.
